I hated it when managers from my previous work tell me that “I’m too young to understand” or that I should listen to them because “they have enough experience” . Please don’t get me wrong, I highly respect someone’s expertise, experience and knowledge they bring to the table as problems occur almost the same every time. But what I don’t understand are the assumptions that their ways are better than others and their ways are the ONLY way.
Yesterday, I was having a meeting with a younger and very intelligent Program Manager. After our meeting, I mentioned to her that I’m having a writer’s block. I really don’t consider myself a writer. But, as a part of my leadership training I am constantly asked to reflect as often as possible – like everyday. WOW, come to find out she blogs and she reflects also on a consistent basis! She suggested that instead of writing, perhaps I could just make a list (Any topic) – then go from there. So let me try it:
10 POSSIBLE REASONS TO LISTEN TO “KIDS”
- They’re limitless and more brave to take chances
- They have new ideas not driven by self-interest
- They have no filters, they say it how they want to say it
- They do not worry about consequences
- They’re more creative, maybe driven by the advance technology around them
- They actually LISTEN
- Their decisions are not based on timing, cost and quality, HAHA (That’s for my PMs)
- They love to talk based on ignorance and non-sense, which ends up being tools for creative thinking
- They’re optimistic
- They do not see any color – everyone’s equal to them.
