I can sincerely say that my VP at work is pretty awesome! She’s the type of leader that challenges me when necessary, gives everyone clear and efficient directions, and for the first time in my career she’s the only leader that has respected my time off from work.
As you may know, I recently had an unexpected surgery. The healing period is much longer than I expected. In fact, the day the doctor informed me that I needed surgery, I texted my manager to let her know that I will be back to work on Friday afternoon (Surgery was scheduled on Thursday late evening) . Jokes on me, apparently recovery time varies from person to person from 2-6weeks! Yes – I thought “who has time for that?!” Guilty that I’ll miss time after just a few weeks of getting promoted, I went into work barely fitting in my pants and pretending that I do not feel the pain.
Honestly, the “GUILT” was engrained to me by my own culture and from previous companies I’ve worked for. Filipinos have strong work ethic to a fault I would say. Some of my previous company gave me a maximum 2 sick days (Like everything heals in two days) and some managers tend to call me and text me almost every hour asking when will I be back and what’s the status of my projects! I did not like this at all.
Anyway, I came into work checked how my team is doing and visited my VP’s office. She looked at me firmly and said “You are doing well as a leader, you have nothing to worry about here GO HOME AND PAINT YOUR NAILS! Plus, I would rather you start on Monday completely refreshed! ” I had this sigh of relief as I walk towards my vehicle to go home. I am sooo thankful that I cannot wait to work harder when I come back.
